How City Placement Actually Works

The first thing to understand is that as an Ausbildung candidate, you do not choose your city the way you might choose a university. Your placement city is determined by which German employer selects you — and Destination Germany's employer network spans the whole of Germany, not just the major cities.

This means candidates are placed wherever their employer's facility is located — which could be Frankfurt, or it could be a smaller town in Baden-Württemberg. Germany's smaller cities and towns are safe, well-connected, and often cheaper to live in than the major metros.

Smaller Towns — The Underrated Option

Many Destination Germany placements are in smaller German towns — particularly in care and mechatronics. Candidates sometimes worry about being in an "unknown" place. In practice, smaller towns often offer the best financial surplus (rent as low as €280–€350), strong employer relationships, and a quieter, more focused first year.

The Indian community will be small or non-existent — which means German immersion happens faster, and language progress is typically the strongest among candidates in smaller placements. Germany's rail network connects all towns to major cities for easy weekend trips.
