JET SET JOBS
Settle Abroad with Jet Set Jobs
Planning your Germany nursing journey requires knowing your timelines. Not a best-case estimate, and not a vague 'it depends' answer - a realistic picture of what happens when, how long each step takes, and where delays are most likely to occur.
This is important because the visa process involves multiple agencies - your German employer, a German state recognition authority, the Indian apostille system, and the German consulate in India - all of which operate on their own timelines. Understanding the full picture helps you plan your language training exit point, manage family expectations, and avoid the frustration of feeling like things are moving slowly when they are actually on track.
| Stage | What Happens | Typical Duration |
|---|---|---|
| B2 Certification | You pass your B2 exam (TELC or Goethe) | Already done / as scheduled |
| Employer Matching | JSJ connects you with a verified German hospital | 2–6 weeks |
| Contract of Labour (COL) Issued | German employer sends your signed job offer | 2–4 weeks after employer match |
| Document Preparation | Apostille, certified translations, recognition application | 4–8 weeks (run in parallel) |
| Recognition Application Submitted | Documents sent to German state authority (Landesprüfungsamt) | Submitted alongside COL |
| Visa Application at German Consulate | Book appointment, submit documents | 1–4 weeks to get appointment |
| Consulate Processing Time | German consulate reviews and issues visa | 6–12 weeks |
| Travel to Germany | Fly and begin work / adaptation period | After visa is in hand |
Adding it up realistically: from B2 certification to departure, most nurses should plan for 5 to 8 months. Some nurses move faster - particularly when employer matching is quick and apostille is already done. A few take longer, typically due to consulate delays or document issues. 5 to 8 months is the honest planning range.
Once you have your B2 certificate, Jet Set Jobs begins the employer matching process. We work with verified German hospitals and care facilities who have open positions for internationally qualified nurses. The matching process involves reviewing your profile, identifying suitable employer partners, and coordinating introductions.
How quickly this moves depends on the current pool of open positions and how closely your specialisation and preferences match what employers need. Most of our nurses receive employer interest within 2 to 6 weeks of B2 certification. Some are matched faster.
Once a German hospital agrees to offer you a position, they issue the Contract of Labour (COL). This is the document that makes everything else possible - without a signed COL, the visa application cannot begin. The COL is issued by the German hospital on their official letterhead and typically reaches you within 2 to 4 weeks of the employer confirming interest.
Document preparation involves two main tracks running simultaneously: apostille of your Indian qualification documents and certified German translations of those same documents. Both take time and need to be planned carefully.
Apostille alone - notarisation, state authentication, and MEA processing - typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Certified translation (done by a sworn German translator) takes 1 to 2 weeks for a standard set of nursing documents. When both are being done in parallel, and if you started early, this stage can be completed in 4 to 6 weeks. If you start late, it can stretch to 8 weeks or more.
Blog #117 covers apostille in full detail. Blog #116 covers the complete document checklist.
India has German consulates in five cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. Once your documents are ready, you need to book a visa appointment at the consulate jurisdiction for your place of residence.
Appointment availability varies. In busy periods - typically the first half of the year - appointments can be booked up 3 to 4 weeks in advance. In quieter periods, you may get an appointment within 1 to 2 weeks. Check the German consulate website regularly once your documents are nearing completion. Do not wait until all documents are in hand before checking for appointments - start monitoring slots early.
This is the stage that surprises most nurses - and the one that most commonly causes frustration. After you submit your visa application at the consulate, the consulate processes it internally. This typically takes between 6 and 12 weeks for a Section 16d Recognition Visa.
During this time, the consulate verifies your documents, confirms the employment offer with the German employer, and coordinates with the German immigration authority (Ausländerbehörde) in the relevant state. You may be asked for additional documents during this period - respond promptly to any consulate communication.
Processing times are longer at the Delhi consulate compared to some other cities. If you have the option of applying at a different consulate jurisdiction, it may be worth discussing with your Jet Set Jobs advisor. However, consulate jurisdiction is typically determined by your place of residence in India.
| Potential Delay | How to Avoid It |
|---|---|
| Apostille started late | Begin apostille while still in B2 training - do not wait for COL |
| Missing or incomplete documents | Use the JSJ document checklist - verify everything before submission |
| Translation errors or uncertified translators | Use only sworn/certified translators coordinated through JSJ |
| Consulate appointment not booked early | Monitor consulate website from 4–6 weeks before expected readiness |
| Additional documents requested by consulate | Respond within 5 working days - delays here extend total processing time |
| Recognition application missing | Ensure recognition application is submitted alongside COL - JSJ handles this |
Here is what an average JSJ nurse's timeline looks like in practice:
| Month | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Month 0 | B2 exam passed and certificate received |
| Month 1 | Employer matching begins; apostille process started simultaneously |
| Month 1–2 | COL received from German hospital |
| Month 2–3 | All documents apostilled, translated, and ready |
| Month 3 | Visa application submitted at German consulate |
| Month 4–5 | Consulate processing ongoing |
| Month 5–6 | Visa approved and passport returned |
| Month 6 | Travel to Germany and begin work |
This example assumes smooth employer matching and documents started early. The fastest timeline we have seen at Jet Set Jobs is around 4 months from B2 to departure. The average is closer to 6 months. Build your plans around 6 months - anything faster is a bonus.
The Germany nursing visa process is not instant - but it is predictable. When you know the stages, know the typical durations, and start your preparation at the right time, there are very few surprises. The nurses who face the most delays are almost always the ones who started apostille late, did not have documents ready when needed, or underestimated consulate processing time.
At Jet Set Jobs, we track every nurse's document and visa timeline proactively. You will never be left wondering what step you are on or what is needed next. That is our job - and it is one we take seriously.
