What Just Happened - The CBSE NEP 2026 Language Change Explained

On April 9, 2026, CBSE issued a formal circular directing all affiliated schools to implement a new three-language policy from the 2026-27 academic session for Class 6 students. The policy is part of NEP 2020 and NCFSE 2023. Every student must now study three languages - R1, R2, and R3 - with at least two being Indian languages. This leaves no room for German or French as a formal third language.

Schools are replacing German and French with Sanskrit, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, or Marathi. By 2030, German and French will be completely removed from all CBSE classes. Some schools may offer German only as a club period - not a graded, credit-bearing subject.

📅 CBSE NEP German Phase-Out Timeline

2026-27: German/French removed as formal subject for new Class 6 students

2027-28: Phase-out extends to Class 7 cohort

2028: First board exams under new framework - only R1 and R2 assessed

2030-31: Complete phase-out - German/French removed from all CBSE classes

Students currently in Classes 7-10 continue this year - but the clock is ticking.

What This Means for Your Child

Your Child's SituationWhat Happens Under NEPWhat Parents Should Do
Class 6, 2026-27 onwardsGerman no longer available as school subjectStart external coaching immediately to preserve progress
Currently in Class 7-10 (still in school German)German continues this year but phases out by 2030Begin parallel coaching now - don't wait for school to drop it
Has completed some German (A1/A2) in schoolSchool German has no international certificate valueShift to CEFR-aligned coaching and earn TELC/Goethe certifications
Interested in Germany for career or universityNEP further reduces German exposure in schoolBegin structured A1-B2 coaching immediately

💡 The critical insight: School German was never CEFR-certified. Even before NEP, a school's German programme did not produce TELC or Goethe certificates. What your child needs for Germany - for university, Ausbildung, or a career - is structured coaching that ends in a recognised B2 certification.

Why German Still Matters - More Than Ever

Germany Is Actively Recruiting Indian Talent

Germany's Skilled Immigration Act has made it significantly easier for Indian professionals to get work visas. Germany needs 400,000 skilled workers annually. Every pathway - nursing, Ausbildung, Skilled Worker Visa - requires B2 German.

Nursing - Approx. ₹27-29 Lakh Annual Salary

A GNM or BSc Nursing graduate with B2 German can earn €3,300-€3,500 per month in Germany. The demand for Indian nurses is structural and long-term. Jet Set Jobs has helped 583+ candidates start this journey.

Ausbildung - Paid Apprenticeships for Young Indians

Class 12 Science graduates aged 18-25 can access Germany's Ausbildung programme - €900-€1,300 per month, direct route to permanent residency. Germany had 270,000+ unfilled positions in 2024. Private coaching is now the only pathway for young Indians to access this.

German Universities Are Tuition-Free

With B2 German, Indian students can attend globally ranked German public universities for free. This option becomes more exclusive - and more valuable - as German disappears from school curricula.

Why Jet Set Jobs for School Students

CEFR-Aligned, Certificate-Leading Curriculum

JSJ teaches to the CEFR framework using Linie 1 (Klett Verlag) for A1-B1 and Einfach weiter B2 (telc) for B2. Every level ends with preparation for TELC Deutsch or Goethe-Zertifikat - internationally recognised exams, unlike school grades.

Flexible for School Schedules

Students can join JSJ's online batch (3 hours per day, flexible timing) or the offline batch at South Patel Nagar in evenings or on weekends. Many JSJ students in Classes 8-12 attend in morning or after-school hours.

Honest Timeline

A1 to B2 takes 10-12 months: A1 (3 months), A2 (2 months), B1 (3 months), B2 (2 months). A student starting at Class 8 or 9 can realistically have B2 certification before finishing Class 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child was learning German in Class 7. Will they have to start from scratch?

Not necessarily. JSJ offers a free level assessment for students with prior German exposure. Many school-level German students can directly enter the A2 batch. School German builds foundational vocabulary and grammar that carries into the CEFR programme.

My child has no German background. Is it too late to start?

Absolutely not. The A1 batch is for complete beginners. A student starting A1 at Class 8 or 9 has a realistic path to B2 before Class 12. Many JSJ students started with zero German knowledge.

What age is appropriate to start German coaching at JSJ?

Jet Set Jobs welcomes students from Class 6 (approximately 11-12 years) onwards. Students from Class 8 onwards tend to progress most efficiently due to their study habits and maturity.

Can my child attend both school and JSJ German simultaneously?

Yes - and this is the recommended approach for students in Classes 7-9 who still have school German. Parallel coaching at JSJ while the school programme exists gives a significant head start.

How is JSJ different from what my child was doing in school?

School German followed general syllabuses with no standardised exit exam. JSJ teaches to the CEFR framework and prepares students for TELC and Goethe certification. The outcome is a globally recognised B2 certificate - not just a school grade.
