What Happens After You Receive the Conditional Offer Letter? The Complete Next Steps

📌 What You'll Learn

The Conditional Offer Letter is a milestone - but it is also the start of the most critical phase of the Ausbildung process. This blog maps every step between receiving your COL and boarding your flight to Germany: language completion, instalment, document preparation, Ausbildungsvertrag, visa application, and departure.

The COL Is the Midpoint, Not the Finish Line

When candidates receive their Conditional Offer Letter, there is often a natural instinct to relax - the employer has confirmed, Germany is coming. This instinct is understandable but misplaced. The COL is the midpoint of the journey, not the end.

Between your COL and your flight to Germany sit the most critical remaining steps: completing B2 language training, passing the official B2 exam, gathering a detailed document dossier, receiving your Ausbildungsvertrag, applying for the visa, attending the visa interview, and completing pre-departure preparation. Understanding the full picture from COL onwards removes anxiety and enables focused action.

Immediate Action: The 7-Day Window

The first action after receiving your COL is the third programme fee instalment of ₹1,37,500 + GST, due within 7 days of COL receipt. Before paying, review the COL carefully: confirm employer name, training occupation (Ausbildungsberuf), proposed city, proposed start date, and monthly stipend. If anything requires clarification, contact your JSJ counsellor immediately - before the instalment is paid.

PHASE 1

Completing B2 Language Training (3–4 months from COL)

For most candidates, the COL arrives during the B1 phase. The remaining B1 consolidation and B2 preparation typically takes 3 to 4 months of consistent study from COL receipt. This is the most demanding language phase.

B2 proficiency means you can understand complex text, interact with fluency, produce clear written output, and explain viewpoints. In Germany this means: participating in Berufsschule classes, communicating with colleagues, managing daily life - all in German.

The B2 exam preparation in the final 4 to 6 weeks is as important as the training before it. JSJ trainers structure the pre-exam period around TELC and Goethe-Institut B2 formats: reading, listening, writing, and the oral exam. Mock exams under real conditions consistently improve performance.

⚠️ Critical Language Note

TELC B2 and Goethe-Institut B2 are the only accepted certificates for the Ausbildung visa. Certificates from other bodies - even if they claim B2 equivalence - are not accepted by the German consulate. When booking your B2 exam, confirm you are using an authorised TELC or Goethe-Institut examination centre. JSJ will confirm the correct centre for your city.

PHASE 2

Document Preparation - Begin in Parallel, Not After B2

One of the most effective time-savers is beginning non-language documents immediately after COL receipt - in parallel with B2 training. Documents involving translations, notarisation, or bank statement compilation take lead time. Starting early means your full dossier is ready the moment your B2 certificate arrives.

PHASE 3

Ausbildungsvertrag - Your Training Contract

Once your B2 certificate is received, Destination Germany GmbH coordinates with your matched employer to issue the signed Ausbildungsvertrag - the legally binding 3-year training contract under German law. This names the employer, training occupation, start date, working hours, annual leave, and monthly stipend.

From B2 submission to Ausbildungsvertrag receipt typically takes 1 to 3 weeks. This is the last document needed before visa submission - which is why preparing all other documents in parallel during B2 training saves valuable time.

PHASE 4

Visa Application and Interview

With B2 certificate and Ausbildungsvertrag in hand, the visa application is submitted to the German consulate in your jurisdiction (New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, or Bengaluru). Processing time ranges from 4 to 12 weeks. Applications from October to March typically process faster than June to September.

A visa interview is scheduled after application submission - conducted in person at the consulate. Full interview preparation guidance is in Blog #169.

PHASE 5

Pre-Departure Orientation and Flight

Once the visa is approved, JSJ conducts a pre-departure orientation covering: Anmeldung (address registration), health insurance enrolment, bank account opening, and first-day employer process. Book your flight as soon as the visa is received - do not wait. From Day 1 in Germany, your stipend clock begins.

📌 The Post-COL Summary
