When Indian physiotherapists ask about Germany, the visa question causes significant anxiety. 'Do I need full recognition before applying?' 'Will the consulate reject me?' 'How long will it take?' Most of this anxiety comes from a lack of clear, specific information โ so this blog provides exactly that.
The good news is that the visa pathway for physiotherapists is well established, legally structured, and has been used successfully by thousands of Indian healthcare professionals. Understanding it clearly removes the fear and turns it into a checklist.
The Section 16d visa takes its name from Section 16d of the German Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz). It is the legal instrument that allows foreign healthcare professionals โ doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and other regulated health professions โ to enter Germany for the purpose of having their foreign qualification formally recognised, while simultaneously working in their profession during that process.
This is a critical distinction. With the Section 16d visa, you do not need full professional recognition before you travel. You arrive in Germany already employed, already earning, and the recognition process is completed in Germany under the supervision of your employer and the relevant state authority.
