One of the most important conversations in our counselling sessions is about timeline. Candidates often arrive with a mental model that looks like: 'I will learn German for a few months, then apply, and be in Germany within a year.' This is not realistic - and candidates who carry this expectation end up frustrated at a process that is actually working correctly.
The Germany physiotherapy journey is a structured, multi-phase process. Each phase has its own requirements and its own timeline. Understanding those timelines clearly - so you can plan your finances, manage your family's expectations, and make sound decisions about when to start - is what this blog is about.
| Phase | What Happens | Duration | Running Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 - Language Training A1 to B2 | Structured German language training on JSJ's online platform. Flexible batch timings. B2 certification exam at the end. | 10โ12 months | Month 10โ12 |
| Phase 2 - A2/B1 Pre-Screening | JSJ recruitment team pre-screens candidates at A2 or B1 level. Candidates who pass receive a Conditional Offer Letter. Happens during months 5โ8 of language training. | Integrated - Month 5โ8 | Ongoing within Phase 1 |
| Phase 3 - Document Apostille & Translation | Collection, notarisation, state authentication, MEA apostille, and certified German translation of all documents. Run in parallel from A2/B1 stage. | 3โ6 weeks per batch - start at A2/B1 | Ideally complete by Month 12โ14 |
| Phase 4 - Employer Introduction & Interview | JSJ introduces B2-certified candidates to verified German employers. Employer interview (video call). Contract of Labour issued on successful match. | 1โ3 months after B2 clearance | Month 13โ15 |
| Phase 5 - Visa Application | National visa application submitted to German consulate with COL, B2 certificate, apostilled and translated documents. | Appointment wait: 4โ8 weeks. Processing: 8โ12 weeks | Month 16โ20 |
| Phase 6 - Pre-Departure Preparation | Flight booking, accommodation, medical checks, vaccination documents, financial preparation. | 2โ4 weeks after visa issued | Month 20โ22 |
| Arrival in Germany | Depart India. Arrive in Germany. Begin employment. | โ | Month 20โ26 from enrolment |
Every phase has dependencies. You cannot apply for a visa before you have a COL. You cannot get a COL before you have a B2 certificate. You cannot get a B2 certificate before completing the training. Each step unlocks the next. The visa processing timeline is set by the German consulate. The apostille process is set by government processing speeds. These are not things that can be meaningfully rushed.
| Delay Factor | Typical Time Added | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Gaps or breaks in language training | 1โ3 months | Treat batch attendance like a professional obligation - consistent weekly commitment. |
| Starting documents late - waiting until B2 | 6โ8 weeks minimum | Begin document collection and apostille at A2/B1 Conditional Offer Letter stage. |
| Lapsed professional registration | 2โ4 weeks plus re-apostille | Check registration expiry before enrolment. Renew immediately if lapsed. |
| Employer match taking longer | 1โ3 additional months | Be flexible on German state preference. Candidates open to eastern states match faster. |
| Consulate appointment wait times | 4โ8 additional weeks | Book consulate appointment the moment COL is issued - do not wait for all documents. |
| Document rejections due to errors | 4โ8 weeks for re-processing | Use certified German translators. Apostille before translating. Follow JSJ's checklist. |
| Month | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Month 1 | Enrol in JSJ programme. Begin A1 German language training. |
| Month 2โ3 | Complete A1 level. Begin A2 training. |
| Month 4โ5 | Reach A2/B1 level. JSJ pre-screening assessment conducted. |
| Month 5โ6 | Conditional Offer Letter issued to successful candidates. Begin document collection and apostille. |
| Month 6โ8 | Continue language training to B1. Documents being apostilled and translated. |
| Month 9โ10 | Reach B1 level. Continue to B2. Documents apostilled and translated - ready for visa. |
| Month 11โ12 | Complete B2 training. Appear for B2 certification exam. |
| Month 12โ13 | B2 certificate received. JSJ introduces candidate to employer. Employer interview conducted. |
| Month 13โ15 | Contract of Labour (COL) issued by German employer. |
| Month 14โ15 | Book German consulate visa appointment. Submit complete visa application. |
| Month 16โ19 | Visa processing at German consulate. Biometric appointment completed. |
| Month 19โ20 | Visa issued. Book flight. Pre-departure preparation. |
| Month 20โ22 | Depart India. Arrive in Germany. Begin employment on day one. |
This represents the streamlined version. For most candidates, the realistic total is 22 to 26 months with natural variations in each phase.
Arriving is not the end - it is the beginning of the professional phase. After arrival: address registration within two weeks, employer submits recognition application, provisional Berufserlaubnis issued within one to three months, adaptation period begins (six to eighteen months), FSP professional language exam taken during this period, and full Berufsanerkennung upon successful completion. The total time from enrolment in India to full professional recognition in Germany is typically 30 to 44 months - approximately two and a half to four years.
