Settle Abroad with Jet Set Jobs
Here is the most important point first. Both Germany and Austria are German-speaking countries, and both expect a solid level of German - usually B2 - for nursing. So the single biggest investment you make, your language, counts towards either destination. You are not choosing between two completely different journeys; you are choosing between two doors that the same key can open.
Germany typically uses a recognition-based work visa (the Section 16d route) for nurses completing recognition. Austria uses the Red-White-Red Card - a points-based work-and-residence permit for skilled workers in shortage occupations, and nursing is on Austria's shortage list. Both are well-established routes designed to bring qualified nurses in; they simply work differently.
In Germany, your qualification goes through Anerkennung towards full recognition (Approbation). In Austria, the process is called Nostrifikation, handled through universities of applied sciences. Austria's nursing is a degree-level profession, so its recognition can be a little more academic and may involve supplementary courses or exams. Neither is harder in a bad way - they are just different in shape.
In Germany you become a Pflegefachkraft / Pflegefachperson. In Austria, the qualified registered nurse title is DGKP - Diplomierte Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger:in. Below that sit nursing-assistant levels (Pflegefachassistenz and Pflegeassistenz). It is the same profession, with different names and a slightly different structure.
| Dimension | Germany | Austria |
|---|---|---|
| Language base | German B2 | German B2 (C1 for recognition in Vienna) |
| Visa route | Recognition visa (Section 16d) | Red-White-Red Card (shortage occupation) |
| Recognition | Anerkennung โ Approbation | Nostrifikation (via universities) |
| Registered nurse title | Pflegefachkraft / Pflegefachperson | DGKP |
| Salary structure | 12 months + yearly Christmas bonus | Often 14 payments a year |
| Nurse demand | Strong shortage | Strong shortage (on official list) |
Both countries face a genuine nursing shortage, so both want you. Both offer strong worker protection, generous paid leave, and stable, well-paid careers. And both place a high value on German language and a recognised qualification. Whichever you choose, you are entering a professional, protected, long-term working life - not a precarious one.
There is no universally 'better' option - both are excellent. Some nurses are drawn to Austria's lifestyle, mountains and the 14-salary structure; others prefer Germany's larger job market and faster, more familiar recognition path. The honest answer is that the best choice is personal, and it is exactly the kind of decision we help you think through clearly rather than rush.
