Under German civil law, if you accidentally cause damage to another person or their property, you are personally liable for the full cost - with no upper limit. Not your employer, not the state: you. Knock over a cyclist who breaks an arm, or cause a small water leak that ruins the flat below, and the bill can run into six figures. That single rule is why insurance culture here is not paranoia - it is arithmetic.
Personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) covers damage you accidentally cause to other people and their property in daily life. It is not legally mandatory - but practically everyone in Germany has it, many landlords ask for proof of it before handing over keys, and skipping it is seen as genuinely irresponsible. The numbers make the decision easy:
One clarification so there is no confusion with our earlier guide on patient errors: your hospital's insurance covers you at work, within your duties. Privathaftpflicht is for your private life - the supermarket, the street, a friend's home. Two different worlds, two different policies.
Household contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) covers your own belongings - furniture, clothes, laptop, phone - against fire, water damage, storms and burglary. German insurers use a lovely rule of thumb: if you could turn your flat upside down and shake it, everything that falls out is your Hausrat. Your landlord's insurance covers the building, never your things. Cost: roughly €3–10 per month, and around three-quarters of German households carry it. For a new arrival with one suitcase, it can wait a few months; once your flat is furnished and your electronics add up, it is worth having. One trap: a standard policy usually covers a bicycle only when stolen from inside your locked flat or cellar - if you cycle to work, add the bicycle-theft module.
| The situation | Which policy pays |
|---|---|
| Your washing machine leaks and ruins the neighbour's ceiling | Privathaftpflicht (their ceiling) + Hausrat (your rug) |
| You break a friend's laptop | Privathaftpflicht |
| Your flat is burgled and your laptop is stolen | Hausrat |
| You scratch your landlord's fitted kitchen | Privathaftpflicht (with Mietsachschäden) |
| A patient error at work | Neither - your employer's cover at work (see our separate guide) |
This is five minutes on your phone. Several providers offer English-language sign-up and claims, monthly cancellation, and instant proof of cover (useful for landlords). Compare a couple of tariffs, check the sum insured and the Mietsachschäden clause, and you are done. Set it up in your first month - the whole point is that it is there before anything happens.
