📌 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Which visa you actually need - and why it's not a tourist visa - what really happens at the appointment (and the ‘interview’ myth), and realistic timelines plus the honest caveats no one should hide from you.
You've cleared B2, passed the employer interview, received your offer. One step now stands between you and Germany: the visa. For many families it's the most nerve-wracking part - mostly because it's the least understood. So let's demystify it completely. Handled properly, the visa stage is far more administrative than dramatic.
This is the foundation, and getting it right matters. Because your Ausbildung lasts far longer than 90 days, you apply for a National visa (a ‘D’ visa), not a short-stay Schengen tourist visa. They're different applications with different rules, and the National visa naturally takes longer to process. Anyone treating your Ausbildung move like a tourist trip has misunderstood the process from the start - this is a long-stay visa for training and work.
In India, German visa applications are handled through VFS Global, the authorised visa application centre - you don't book directly with the embassy. Alongside it, Germany's Consular Services Portal (introduced in 2026) lets you complete forms, upload documents and track your application online. The two work together: you prepare and submit digitally, then attend VFS in person for the physical step. In-person attendance is required, because your biometrics have to be captured on the spot.
The appointment itself is short - typically 15 to 20 minutes - and entirely procedural. In that time:
That's it. There's no lengthy questioning, no test to pass in the room. It's a submission of your file, not a confrontation - which is why organised, complete paperwork matters more than nerves.
This trips up a lot of people, so hear it clearly: at VFS there is no traditional ‘visa interview’. VFS collects your application and biometrics; the actual decision is made afterwards by German embassy or consulate staff, who review your file. So your success rests not on charming an interviewer, but on submitting a complete, honest and internally consistent application - documents that line up with each other and with your offer. That is entirely within your control, and it's exactly what we prepare with you.
Your exact checklist comes from the German mission, but a National visa for training typically requires:
A practical tip that genuinely helps: arrange everything in the exact order of the mission's checklist. Well-organised files are processed faster, and disorganised ones are often set aside. We help you assemble and order this properly before you go.
Two timelines matter, and both call for early action. First, appointment slots can be booked out from around two to eight weeks ahead - and considerably longer in Delhi and Mumbai during the peak season (roughly May to August). Second, National visa processing typically takes several weeks and can run to a few months, far longer than the short Schengen timelines you'll see quoted online. The lesson is simple: start early, book your slot as soon as you're eligible, and don't leave the visa to the last minute.
Three things you deserve to hear straight:
| Stage | Detail |
|---|---|
| Visa type | National (D) visa - long stay, for training/work |
| Where (India) | VFS Global centre + Consular Services Portal |
| At the appointment | ~15–20 min: document check, biometrics, fee, submission |
| Decided by | German embassy/consulate (not VFS) |
| Timeline | Slots ~2–8 weeks out; processing several weeks to a few months |
⚠️ THE HONEST BOTTOM LINE
The visa feels like the scariest step, but it's largely administrative: a complete, honest, consistent, well-organised file is what carries it - not luck or charm - and that's exactly what we prepare with you. Be honest with yourself too, though: no consultancy controls the embassy's decision, and anyone promising a ‘guaranteed visa’ is not telling you the truth. Prepare thoroughly, apply early, and give yourself the best possible chance.
Is there a visa interview I need to prepare for?
Not in the traditional sense. At VFS you submit documents and give biometrics - there's no interview to ‘pass’ in the room. The German mission decides afterwards by reviewing your file, so a complete, consistent, well-prepared application matters far more than interview nerves.
How long does the whole visa process take?
Plan for several weeks to a few months in total. Appointment slots can be two to eight weeks out (longer in Delhi and Mumbai in peak season), and National visa processing itself takes several weeks and sometimes a few months. Start early - it's the single best thing you can do.
Can someone apply or attend on my behalf?
No. You must attend in person because your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are captured at the appointment - there's no proxy option. Be wary, too, of anyone offering to ‘arrange’ slots unofficially; always go through the authorised centre.
