What Documents Do Indian Nurses Need to Work in Germany Complete Checklist 2026

A neat stack of important nursing documents with an apostille stamp on a desk

🎯 Document preparation is the step most nurses underestimate – and it is the step most likely to cause delays. This complete checklist tells you exactly what you need, what apostille means, and how to prepare everything correctly.

Getting your documents right is not glamorous – but it is one of the most important parts of the Germany process. Incomplete or incorrectly prepared documents are the single biggest cause of delays in the Berufsanerkennung (recognition) process. This checklist will help you prepare everything correctly, the first time.

The Master Document Checklist

Part A – Nursing Qualification Documents

  • GNM Diploma OR BSc Nursing Degree Certificate – original and attested copy.
  • All year mark sheets / academic transcripts – all years of the programme
  • Internship completion certificate (if separate from degree)
  • Detailed syllabus of your nursing programme – from your college/university, stamped
  • Practical training logbook (if available)

Part B – Registration & Licensing

  • State Nursing Council Registration Certificate – current and valid
  • Indian Nursing Council (INC) registration – if applicable
  • Good Standing Certificate from your State Nursing Council – some states require this

Part C – Identity & Personal Documents

  • Valid Indian Passport – minimum 18 months validity at time of application
  • Aadhaar Card – for identity verification in India
  • Birth Certificate – apostilled

Part D – Work Experience

  • Experience letters from all previous employers – on official letterhead with stamp
  • Job description letters detailing duties performed – if available
  • Payslips – some German authorities request these as supporting evidence

Part E – Language Certification

  • TELC Deutsch B2 or Goethe-Zertifikat B2 – original certificate
  • This is required for the visa application and recognition process

What is Apostille and Why Do You Need It?

Apostille is an official government stamp that certifies your documents are authentic – recognised internationally under the Hague Convention. In India, apostilles are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through its district offices or the RPO (Regional Passport Office).

Every document you submit to Germany must either be apostilled or bear the stamp of the MEA. Without this, German authorities will not accept your documents.

Document Apostille Requirement
Nursing Degree Certificate Apostille required
Mark Sheets Apostille required
State Nursing Council Certificate Apostille required
Birth Certificate Apostille required
Experience Letters Notarisation usually sufficient
Syllabus College stamp + notarisation usually sufficient
Good Standing Certificate Apostille required if issued by Nursing Council

German Translation – What You Need to Know

All documents submitted to German authorities must be translated into German by a certified (vereidigter) translator. This is not optional and not something you can do yourself or through Google Translate.

  • Only translations from a court-sworn (vereidigter) German translator are accepted
  • The translator must be certified in Germany – Indian translators are not accepted by most state authorities
  • Jet Set Jobs connects our nurses with certified German translation services we have vetted
  • Translation costs: approximately ₹2,000–₹5,000 per document depending on length

Common Document Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting photocopies without proper attestation – authorities require certified copies
  • Submitting an outdated Nursing Council certificate – must be current (check renewal dates)
  • Missing the syllabus – this is the most frequently forgotten document and the most frequently requested by German authoritiesd
  • Not getting experience letters on company letterhead with HR signature and stamp
  • Using an uncertified translator – this is a very common and costly mistake
