Austria Nursing Recognition for Indian Nurses – Step-by-Step Guide

Indian nurse submitting qualification documents for Austrian Nostrifikation

🎯 Before working as a registered nurse in Austria, your Indian qualification needs official recognition. The Austrian process is called Nostrifikation – and this guide explains it clearly.

One of the most frequent questions we receive about Austria: ‘Is the recognition process the same as Germany?’ Similar – but with important differences. Understanding the Austrian-specific process prevents delays.

What is Nostrifikation?

Nostrifikation is Austria’s official process for recognising foreign qualifications. For nursing, it is managed by the Bundesministerium fuer Soziales, Gesundheit, Pflege und Konsumentenschutz (Federal Ministry for Social Affairs and Health) or the health authority of the relevant Austrian state. The goal: to confirm your Indian training meets the Austrian nursing standard.

GNM and BSc Recognition Outcomes in Austria

Qualification Typical Outcome
BSc Nursing (4 years, India) High equivalence – full or near-full recognition in most cases
GNM Diploma (3.5 years, India) Partial equivalence common – supervised practice often required
Common gap areas Psychiatric nursing, geriatric care, community nursing

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1 – Document Preparation
Nursing degree, all mark sheets, detailed programme syllabus, State Nursing Council registration, experience letters, and passport – all apostilled and translated into German by a certified (Austrian-recognised) translator.

Step 2 – Submit to Competent Authority
Submit to the Federal Ministry or the health authority of the state where your employer is located. Vienna applications go to MA 40 (Wiener Magistrat).

Step 3 – Assessment
Authority compares your curriculum against the Austrian nursing standard. Takes 3–5 months. You can enter Austria and begin work with a temporary permit during this period.

Step 4 – Adaptation Period (if required)
If gaps are found: a supervised Praxiszeit (practical period) of 3–6 months in an Austrian facility. You are paid your full salary throughout this period.

Step 5 – DGKP Registration
After recognition: register as a Diplomierte Gesundheits- und Krankenpflegeperson (DGKP) – the Austrian registered nurse title – with your state nursing association. This is your Austrian nursing licence.
