What Happens After You Get a Job Offer as a Nurse in Germany?

🎯 Receiving your German nursing job offer is a major milestone – but there are still important steps between the offer and your first day. This guide tells you exactly what to do, in what order, so nothing falls through the cracks.

The job offer letter in your inbox. After months of German language training, document preparation, and waiting – it is finally real. Germany wants you. But before you book your flight, there are several important steps to complete. Missing or delaying any of these can push your start date back by weeks or even months. Here is the complete guide

Step 1 – Review and Sign the Employment Contract

Read your German employment contract carefully before signing. Key things to verify:

  • Job title – should reflect your qualification level (Pflegefachkraft, Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger/in, or similar)
  • Salary – check against TVΓΆD (public sector) or equivalent collective agreement rate for your experience level
  • Working hours – standard German nursing contract is 38–40 hours per week
  • Probation period – typically 3–6 months in Germany
  • Holiday entitlement – minimum 24 days, verify the exact number in your contract
  • Start date – confirm this is realistic given your visa processing timeline

If you have questions about specific contract terms, Jet Set Jobs can help you understand them before you sign.
Never sign a contract with terms you do not understand.

Step 2 – Submit Qualification Recognition Application

If you have not already submitted your Berufsanerkennung application, do this immediately after receiving the job offer. The recognition authority in your target German state needs your complete document file. Processing takes 3–6 months – so the sooner it is submitted, the sooner it is resolved.

The job offer from a German employer actually strengthens your recognition application – some authorities process applications faster when they see an employer is waiting.

Step 3 – Apply for Your German Skilled Worker Visa

Book your appointment at the German Embassy in New Delhi (or Consulate in Mumbai/Chennai) as soon as possible – Embassy appointment slots for skilled worker visas fill up quickly, often 4–6 weeks in advance.

  • Book the appointment online at the German Embassy India website
  • Prepare your complete document file – contract, recognition documents, B2 certificate, apostilled degree, Nursing Council certificate, accommodation proof, health insurance
  • Attend the appointment – bring originals and copies of every document
  • Pay the visa fee – approximately €75 (around β‚Ή7,000)
  • Visa processing after submission: typically 4–8 weeks

Step 4 – Arrange Accommodation in Germany

Many employers – especially hospitals and care homes – provide temporary accommodation for international nurses in the first 3–6 months. Confirm with your employer:

  • Is temporary accommodation provided? If so, for how long and at what cost (if any)?
  • What is the address? You will need this for your visa application and your post-arrival registration (Anmeldung)
  • What is included – furnished? WiFi? Kitchen facilities?

If your employer does not provide accommodation, start researching housing in your destination city. Wohngemeinschaft (shared flat / WG) is the most common and affordable option for newly arrived nurses – monthly rent for a room typically €400–€700 depending on city.

Step 5 – Sort Out Health Insurance

German law requires all residents to have health insurance. As a nurse employed by a German hospital or care home, you will typically be covered by statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung / GKV) through your employer’s contributions plus your own contribution (deducted from salary). Your employer will usually register you with a GKV provider – ask them which one and whether any action is required from you.

Step 6 – Notify Jet Set Jobs
