What Happens After You Get a Job Offer as a Nurse in Germany?

๐ŸŽฏ Receiving your German nursing job offer is a major milestone-but there are still important steps between the offer letter and your first shift. This guide tells you exactly what to do, in what order, so nothing falls through the cracks.

The job offer notification arrives. After months of German language training, document preparation, and waiting-it is finally real. A hospital or care home in Germany wants you. But before you book your flight, there are several important steps to complete carefully. Missing or rushing any of these can delay your start date by weeks or even months.

Here is the complete, step-by-step guide to everything that needs to happen between your job offer and your first day in Germany.

Step 1-Read Your Employment Contract Carefully

Before signing anything, read the employment contract thoroughly. This is a legally binding document and the terms it contains will govern your entire working relationship with this employer.
Key things to check in your German employment contract:

  • Job title-should reflect your qualification level: Pflegefachkraft, Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger/in, or Pflegehilfskraft in Anerkennung (nurse in recognition)
  • Salary-check the gross monthly amount. For the recognition phase: โ‚ฌ2,800โ€“โ‚ฌ3,000. Post-recognition: โ‚ฌ3,300โ€“โ‚ฌ3,500. Verify it matches what was discussed
  • Working hours-standard is 38โ€“40 hours per week. Check if the contract specifies rotational shifts
  • Probation period-typically 3โ€“6 months. You can resign during this period with shorter notice
  • Annual leave-minimum 24 days under German law; many employers offer 28โ€“30 days. Verify the exact number
  • Notice period-usually 4 weeks during probation; 4โ€“8 weeks after
  • Start date-confirm this is realistic given your visa processing timeline (typically 8โ€“14 weeks from application)

๐Ÿ’ก If any contract term is unclear, Jet Set Jobs can help you understand it before you sign. Never sign a contract with terms you do not fully understand.

Step 2-Submit Your Berufsanerkennung Application

If you have not already submitted your nursing recognition application, do it immediately after receiving the job offer. The competent authority in your target German state needs your complete document file to begin assessment.

The employer’s job offer letter actually strengthens your recognition application-it shows the authority that a facility is waiting for you. Some state authorities process applications faster when there is an active employer contract attached.

If your recognition application is already in progress, inform the authority that you now have a confirmed job offer and request an update on your processing timeline.

Step 3-Book Your German Embassy Appointment

Do this the same week you receive your job offer-do not wait. German Embassy appointment slots for Skilled Worker Visas fill up 4โ€“8 weeks in advance. The sooner you book, the sooner you can submit your application.

  • Go to india.diplo.de to book online-German Embassy New Delhi or Consulate in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, or Kolkata
  • Select the appointment type: National Visa for Employment / Recognition (ยง16d)
  • Bring your complete document file on the day-no missing documents

Step 4-Prepare Your Complete Visa Document File

While waiting for your Embassy appointment, prepare every document in your visa file:

  • Completed visa application form (from india.diplo.de)
  • Valid passport + 2 copies of all pages
  • 2 biometric passport photographs (35x45mm, white background)
  • Signed employment contract from German employer
  • Berufsanerkennung decision or preliminary recognition notice
  • TELC B2 or Goethe B2 certificate-original
  • Apostilled and translated nursing degree + academic transcripts
  • Apostilled and translated State Nursing Council registration
  • Proof of accommodation in Germany
  • Health insurance confirmation for initial period

Step 5-Arrange Accommodation

Confirm your accommodation situation in Germany before your visa appointment-you will need to provide proof of accommodation as part of the visa application.

  • Employer-provided accommodation-many hospitals and care homes offer temporary housing for the first 3โ€“6 months. Ask your employer directly and get a written confirmation letter
  • Private accommodation-if your employer does not provide housing, start researching Wohngemeinschaft (shared flat / WG) options in your destination city. Average monthly rent for a room: โ‚ฌ400โ€“โ‚ฌ700 depending on city
  • Useful portals for finding accommodation in Germany: wg-gesucht.de, immobilienscout24.de, and the Facebook group ‘Indians in Germany Housing’

Step 6-Attend Your Embassy Appointment and Submit

On the day of your appointment:

  • Arrive 10โ€“15 minutes early
  • Bring originals and certified copies of every document
  • Pay the visa fee-approximately โ‚ฌ75 (around โ‚น6,800)
  • Your biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) will be collected
  • The Embassy officer will review your documents and accept your application

Step 7-Wait for Visa Processing

Standard processing time after submission: 4โ€“8 weeks. In some cases it can take longer if additional employer verification is requested. Do not book flights until your visa is confirmed.

Step 8-Receive Visa and Book Flights

Once your visa is approved, you will be notified to collect it. After that:

  • Book flights-inform your employer of your intended arrival date
  • Complete any pre-arrival paperwork your employer requires
  • Pack essentials-including multiple copies of all your documents
  • Carry original certificates in your hand luggage-never in checked baggage
