Some nurses move faster - particularly when employer matching is quick and apostille is already done. A few take longer, typically due to consulate delays or document issues. 5 to 8 months is the honest planning range.

Stage 1: Employer Matching - 2 to 6 Weeks

Once you have your B2 certificate, Jet Set Jobs begins the employer matching process. How quickly this moves depends on the current pool of open positions and how closely your specialisation and preferences match what employers need. Most of our nurses receive employer interest within 2 to 6 weeks of B2 certification. Some are matched faster.

Stage 2: Contract of Labour - 2 to 4 Weeks

Once a German hospital agrees to offer you a position, they issue the Contract of Labour (COL). This is the document that makes everything else possible - without a signed COL, the visa application cannot begin. The COL is issued by the German hospital on their official letterhead and typically reaches you within 2 to 4 weeks of the employer confirming interest.

Stage 3: Document Preparation - 4 to 8 Weeks

Document preparation involves two main tracks running simultaneously: apostille of your Indian qualification documents and certified German translations of those same documents. Both take time and need to be planned carefully.

Apostille alone - notarisation, state authentication, and MEA processing - typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Certified translation (done by a sworn German translator) takes 1 to 2 weeks for a standard set of nursing documents. When both are being done in parallel, and if you started early, this stage can be completed in 4 to 6 weeks. If you start late, it can stretch to 8 weeks or more.

Stage 4: Visa Appointment at the German Consulate - 1 to 4 Weeks

India has German consulates in five cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. Once your documents are ready, you need to book a visa appointment at the consulate jurisdiction for your place of residence.

Appointment availability varies. In busy periods - typically the first half of the year - appointments can be booked up 3 to 4 weeks in advance. In quieter periods, you may get an appointment within 1 to 2 weeks. Check the German consulate website regularly once your documents are nearing completion. Do not wait until all documents are in hand before checking for appointments - start monitoring slots early.

Stage 5: Consulate Processing Time - 6 to 12 Weeks

This is the stage that surprises most nurses - and the one that most commonly causes frustration. After you submit your visa application at the consulate, the consulate processes it internally. This typically takes between 6 and 12 weeks for a Section 16d Recognition Visa.

During this time, the consulate verifies your documents, confirms the employment offer with the German employer, and coordinates with the German immigration authority (Ausländerbehörde) in the relevant state. You may be asked for additional documents during this period - respond promptly to any consulate communication.

Processing times are longer at the Delhi consulate compared to some other cities. If you have the option of applying at a different consulate jurisdiction, it may be worth discussing with your Jet Set Jobs advisor.
