Can a Physiotherapist from a Private College in Delhi Go to Germany? Here's What Actually Matters

This question comes up constantly in our counselling sessions, especially from physiotherapists in Delhi and NCR who graduated from private institutions — Amity University, Sharda University, SGT University, GD Goenka, Manav Rachna, and others. The worry is the same: will Germany respect my degree, or will the fact that I went to a private college count against me?

The honest answer is that this concern, while understandable, is based on a misreading of how German recognition works. This blog explains the actual criteria German authorities use, what they check, and what you should focus on instead of worrying about your college's name.

How Germany Assesses Your Qualification — The Actual Criteria

When a German state authority reviews your Indian physiotherapy qualification, they are not looking at your college's ranking, its fees, or whether it is government-funded or privately run. They are looking at a specific set of factors that determine whether your training is comparable to the German Physiotherapeut standard.

Notice what is not on that list: whether your college is government or private, your NIRF ranking, how much you paid in fees, or how well known your college is outside India.

What About Amity, Sharda, SGT, and Other Delhi NCR Private Universities?

These universities are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and their BPT programmes are part of their respective university systems. A BPT from Amity Noida or SGT Gurgaon is assessed by German authorities on exactly the same criteria as a BPT from a government medical college — curriculum content, clinical hours, and professional registration.

Where private college graduates sometimes face additional scrutiny is in the documentation of clinical training hours. Some private colleges have less formalised internship records compared to government teaching hospitals. If your internship certificate is vague or does not specify hours or departments covered, the German authority may ask for additional supporting documents. This is manageable — but it is worth knowing in advance.

The Three Things That Actually Determine Your Eligibility

1. Your Degree Must Be from a Recognised University

Your BPT degree must be from a university recognised by UGC or the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). All major private universities in Delhi NCR — Amity, Sharda, SGT, GD Goenka, Manav Rachna — are UGC-recognised. If you are unsure, a JSJ counsellor verifies this as a standard part of the eligibility assessment.

2. Your Professional Registration Must Be Active

You must hold a valid registration with your state physiotherapy council or with the IAP. If your registration has lapsed — perhaps because you have not been practising clinically — you need to renew it before beginning the documentation process. A lapsed registration is one of the most common and avoidable reasons for delays.

3. Your Clinical Training Hours Must Be Documented

The German recognition authority will assess whether your clinical training is equivalent to the German standard. This is assessed through your internship certificate, academic transcripts showing clinical postings, and experience certificates from hospitals where you completed rotations. Private college graduates should ensure they have documentation from every clinical rotation — not just the final internship summary.

What Happens If There Are Gaps in Your Documentation?

If the German state authority identifies areas where your documentation does not fully demonstrate equivalence, they have two options: ask you to complete an adaptation period focusing on the gap areas, or ask you to take a Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge examination) in the relevant area. Neither of these is a rejection — they are targeted responses to specific documentation gaps.

Documentation gaps are fixable before you travel if identified early.
