One of the most common questions Indian nurses ask as they approach the end of their German language training is: how does the hospital matching process actually work? Am I presented to one hospital at a time? Can I choose? What if I do not like the hospital I am matched with? Can I interview with more than one?
These are completely reasonable questions - and the answers matter, because the hospital you join will shape your first years in Germany. This blog explains the matching process clearly, including how many interviews are typical, what happens if you want to explore multiple options, and what your preferences can realistically influence.
When you complete your B2 German language certification, JSJ begins the active employer matching process. This involves reviewing your profile - your nursing qualification, clinical experience, specialisation background, personal preferences for city or state, and any specific requirements you have mentioned - and identifying verified German employer partners whose current vacancies match your profile.
JSJ works with a network of verified German hospitals and care homes across multiple German states. We do not have a single employer we route all nurses to - we maintain multiple partnerships so that different nurses can be matched to different employers based on fit.
Standard practice at JSJ is sequential matching - you are introduced to one employer at a time, go through their interview process, and if a match is made, that employer issues your Contract of Labour. If that match does not work out, we move to the next employer.
This approach has practical reasons: presenting a candidate to multiple employers simultaneously can create complications if two employers want to offer you a position at the same time. Sequential matching is more structured and more respectful of employer relationships.
| Preference | How Much It Influences Matching | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| German state or city | Moderate influence | We try to match in your preferred area but availability varies; Thuringia and Saxony have strong demand |
| Hospital type (large hospital vs small care home) | Moderate influence | Both types are available through our network; preference noted and matched where possible |
| Ward specialisation (ICU, general, geriatric, paediatric) | Moderate influence | Depends on your experience and employer openings; not always possible to guarantee |
| Single vs shared accommodation | Low influence | Accommodation varies by employer; we confirm what is available before you commit |
| Proximity to an Indian community | Low-moderate influence | We can advise on cities with Indian communities but cannot guarantee specific location |
Yes. If JSJ presents you with an employer and, after the interview or after reviewing the hospital profile, you decide it is not right for you, you can decline and we will continue looking for a more suitable match. This is a legitimate part of the process.
However, there is an important nuance: if you decline multiple employer matches without a clear, reasonable basis, it becomes harder for JSJ to continue investing matching effort. Be honest about your preferences upfront so we can set realistic expectations from the start.
Some nurses ask whether they can be presented to two or three hospitals at the same time to compare offers. This is not JSJ's standard approach - but there are situations where parallel conversations happen naturally:
JSJ proposes candidates to German employers - but the employer makes the final selection decision. The employer reviews your profile, conducts an interview, and decides whether to extend an offer. JSJ facilitates the introduction, prepares you for the interview, and advocates for your placement - but we cannot guarantee that every employer will select every candidate we present.
This is why your profile presentation matters: how your nursing experience, specialisation, and language ability are framed can significantly influence an employer's decision. JSJ works on this with you before each employer introduction.
| Stage | Typical Duration |
|---|---|
| B2 certification to first employer introduction | 2โ4 weeks |
| Employer review of profile to interview scheduling | 2โ4 weeks |
| Interview to offer/decision | 1โ3 weeks |
| Total: B2 to Contract of Labour (first match, successful) | 6โ10 weeks |
| If first match does not result in offer: next cycle | Add 4โ8 weeks per additional match cycle |
Most JSJ nurses receive a Contract of Labour within 3 to 5 months of completing their B2. Some move faster - particularly nurses with strong ICU or surgical experience who are in high demand.
You are not locked into one hospital and you do have choices - but those choices work best when your preferences are clearly communicated to JSJ at the start of the matching process, not after interviews have already happened. The more clearly we understand what you are looking for, the better we can match you to an employer that is genuinely right for you.
JSJ's job is not just to get you any job in Germany - it is to get you the right job, in the right environment, with an employer who understands international recruitment and will support your recognition process properly.
