One of the most important financial questions for any Indian physiotherapist considering Germany is: after paying for my life there, how much will I actually save? The salary figures β β¬2,800 to β¬3,800 gross β look compelling in isolation. But gross salary without a realistic picture of living costs is an incomplete equation.
This blog gives you the actual cost of living numbers for the cities and regions where Indian physiotherapists most commonly work in Germany β not rounded estimates, not best-case scenarios, but figures that reflect what people actually spend.
Germany has enormous variation in living costs between regions. Munich and Frankfurt are among the most expensive cities in Europe. Cities in eastern German states β Erfurt (Thuringia), Dresden (Saxony), Halle, Magdeburg β are significantly more affordable, often by 40 to 50% for rent alone. Many of the rehabilitation centres and hospital units that recruit Indian physiotherapists are located in precisely these smaller, more affordable cities β which means the financial calculation is more favourable than people imagine when they think of Germany as uniformly expensive.

From day one of employment in Germany, you are enrolled in the statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung β GKV) system. Your employer deducts approximately 7.3% of your gross salary, and the employer pays a matching amount. You receive comprehensive health coverage β doctor visits, hospital treatment, prescriptions, and specialist referrals β with no additional monthly premium beyond the automatic payroll deduction. There is no separate health insurance bill to pay and no coverage anxiety.

| Food (groceries + occasional eating out) | β¬220ββ¬320 |

At the mid-point β approximately β¬750 saved per month β that is approximately βΉ67,000 in savings every month, which exceeds the total gross salary of many physiotherapists currently working in India.

Services like Wise (formerly TransferWise), Remitly, and standard bank transfers make it simple to send euros to Indian bank accounts at competitive exchange rates with low fees. Many Indian physiotherapists in Germany send a regular monthly amount to their families in India while maintaining their German savings separately.
