📌 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Germany sits at the centre of Europe's supply chain — and it needs logistics people constantly. This guide covers the warehouse and freight-forwarding Ausbildung roles, who's eligible, the 3-year path, the stipend and salaries, and the honest difference between the hands-on and desk-based routes.
Look at a map of Europe and you'll understand Germany's logistics demand instantly. It's the continent's central crossroads, home to one of Europe's biggest ports and a vast export economy that depends on goods moving smoothly. All of that runs on logistics professionals — and German employers describe the demand for them as higher than ever.
For an Indian student, that translates into a steady, in-demand career path with a paid route in. Logistics is one of the more accessible Ausbildung fields, and it suits practical, organised people from almost any educational background.
It follows the same three-year dual model (a shorter 2-year route exists for one role) — real work at a company plus theory at a Berufsschule, anchored in Germany's vocational training law, finishing with an IHK final examination and a qualification recognised across all 27 EU states.
| Profession | What you actually do | Good fit if you… |
|---|---|---|
| Fachkraft für Lagerlogistik (Warehouse Logistics Specialist) | Receive, store and dispatch goods; manage inventory; operate modern warehouse systems and forklifts | like hands-on, active, practical work |
| Fachlagerist (Warehouse Operator) | Core warehouse handling and goods management — a shorter 2-year route | want a quicker, practical entry into the field |
| Kaufmann/-frau für Spedition und Logistikdienstleistung (Freight Forwarding & Logistics Services) | Plan transport, routes and capacity; handle customs and shipping documents; track shipments — mostly desk-based | prefer planning and coordination at a desk |
Logistics splits into two quite different working lives, and it's worth being clear-eyed about it. The warehouse roles (Fachkraft für Lagerlogistik, Fachlagerist) are active and hands-on — you're on your feet, handling goods, often in shifts that can include nights or weekends, which are paid extra. The freight-forwarding role (Kaufmann für Spedition) is mostly an office job — planning, documents, customer contact. Same industry, very different day. Choose the one that genuinely fits your temperament.
⚠️ AN HONEST NOTE ON WAREHOUSE WORK
Warehouse logistics is physically active and can involve shift, night or weekend hours (paid at a premium). That suits some people very well and others not at all. If you'd rather be at a desk, the freight-forwarding (Spedition) route is the better choice within the same field.
| Stage | Monthly income (gross) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| During training (Azubi) | €1,000–€1,300 | Paid by your employer from Day 1 (varies by year) |
| Newly qualified Fachkraft | €2,500–€3,600+ | Freight-forwarding clerks typically sit toward the upper end |
| With experience / Meister | €4,000+ | Rises with qualifications like the Logistikmeister or Fachwirt |
Logistics offers a clear ladder. After qualifying, further training such as the Logistikmeister or a Fachwirt opens supervisory and management roles with markedly higher pay. And like every Ausbildung path, after roughly four years as a qualified worker you become eligible for permanent residency.
It's a strong fit if you're practical, organised, reliable, and you've honestly decided whether you prefer hands-on warehouse work or desk-based planning. It's a particularly good option for students who want a dependable, in-demand field without needing a technical or science background. As ever, no one can promise a visa — but certified B2 German plus an IHK-registered logistics contract makes for a strong, logical application.
