First, relax: Austria and Germany share the same standard German (Hochdeutsch). The German you learn from A1 to B2 with us is fully usable in Austria - in hospitals, with colleagues, with patients. You are not learning a separate language; you are learning German, which works across both countries.
What differs is flavour, not foundation. Austrian German has a softer accent and some local vocabulary you will pick up quickly on the ground. A few friendly examples:
These are small, charming differences. Your B2 grammar and vocabulary carry you; the local words come naturally once you are there, the way any newcomer picks up local speech.
Austria has its own respected German exam, the ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch). For nursing, certificates from ÖSD, telc and Goethe are widely accepted, so the B2 you earn through recognised exams is valid for the Austrian route. Your certificate is not wasted by choosing Austria.
Here is the honest, important detail. While B2 is the general base, the recognition procedure in Vienna typically requires C1 - a higher level - whereas many other provinces work with B2. So if you are aiming specifically at Vienna, plan for that extra step. Knowing it in advance turns it from a shock into a simple part of the plan.
| Where / what | Typical German level | Note |
|---|---|---|
| General base for nursing | B2 | Your core foundation |
| Recognition in Vienna | C1 | Plan for the higher level |
| Recognition in many other provinces | B2 | Confirm for your specific province |
| Medical-language course | Added during recognition | Focused on healthcare terms |
Whatever you decide, the energy you put into German is the single most transferable investment in your whole journey. B2 is the base for Germany and for Austria; from there, reaching C1 for Vienna or adding medical-language is a top-up, not a restart. Every hour on your German opens doors in both countries.
