π WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Whether IT Ausbildung is really available and how much demand there is, the main Fachinformatiker tracks and what you actually learn in each, and whether you need prior coding - with what it pays and the honest realities.
A question we hear a lot: βIs there actually an IT Ausbildung, or is IT only for university graduates?β It's very real. Germany trains a large share of its IT workforce through the dual system, and demand for skilled IT people - especially software developers and system specialists - remains among the strongest in the country. You learn on the job at a real tech employer while studying part-time, and you're paid throughout.
The core IT Ausbildung profession is the Fachinformatiker, which comes in several specialisations. The two classic ones are the backbone, with newer tracks added as the field has grown:
| Track | What you'd focus on |
|---|---|
| Anwendungsentwicklung (application dev) | Programming and software development - building applications. |
| Systemintegration (system integration) | Networks, servers, IT infrastructure and support. |
| Daten- und Prozessanalyse (data & process) | Working with data, analysis and process optimisation. |
| Digitale Vernetzung (digital networking) | Connected systems, IoT-style networked technology. |
There are also more business-focused IT roles (such as IT system management), but for a Science-minded aspirant, application development and system integration are the two most popular and portable choices.
Depending on your track, you'll learn to write and test code, build and maintain networks and servers, work with databases, and solve real technical problems for a company - all under the guidance of experienced professionals. It's a genuine head start: instead of only studying theory, you graduate with three years of real workplace experience and a recognised qualification.
No. You don't need a computer-science degree or years of coding behind you - that's the whole point of the dual system. You learn the skills during the Ausbildung. A logical, problem-solving mind and genuine interest in technology matter far more than a pre-existing portfolio. A Science background sits perfectly well here.
IT is one of the higher-ceiling routes. A qualified Fachinformatiker typically starts around β¬3,000ββ¬3,600+ gross a month, and the ceiling is high: with experience and specialisation - software development, cloud, cybersecurity - pay climbs well beyond that, with senior software roles reaching considerably more. IT is also one of the fields where skills and experience can matter as much as formal titles, so a strong Ausbildung graduate has real room to grow.
β οΈ THE HONEST PART
IT Ausbildung is competitive, and it rewards genuine interest - if you don't enjoy problem-solving and tech, it's a hard three years. You'll still need B2 German (10β12 months with us); some workplaces use English, but German-medium companies and vocational school mean your German has to carry you. And as always, the employer selects independently, with no guaranteed seat or visa.
Can I really do IT Ausbildung without a coding background?
Yes. The tracks are open to Class 12 pass students, and you learn to code or manage systems during the training itself. What you bring is logic, curiosity and commitment - the technical skills are taught. Many strong IT professionals in Germany started exactly this way.
Which track should I choose - development or integration?
If you enjoy building and coding, application development fits. If you prefer networks, systems and infrastructure, system integration is the match. You don't have to decide alone - we help you align a track to your interests and profile before your application goes out.
Is the pay ceiling really that high?
The starting Fachkraft pay is solid, and IT has one of the strongest upward ceilings of any route - specialising in areas like cloud or cybersecurity can lift earnings significantly with experience. It's a field where continued learning genuinely pays off.
