Why Some Aspirants Don't Make It - and How to Make Sure You Do

Most consultancies only show you the success stories. We'd rather show you the other side too - because if you're about to commit years of your life and your family's money, you deserve to know how people come unstuck. Not to discourage you: to help you go in with your eyes open. The aspirants who succeed are almost always the ones who knew what they were signing up for.

1. Underestimating the German

This is the big one - the single largest reason people stall. Reaching B2 takes 10–12 months of consistent, serious effort, not casual weekend study. Some aspirants enrol imagining the language is a formality that the consultancy will somehow handle for them. It isn't. Nobody can learn German on your behalf. The people who reach B2 are simply the ones who kept showing up to class and did the work every week, including the weeks when they didn't feel like it.

2. Chasing the money, not the trade

Some people pick a field purely because it looked highest-paying, without asking whether they'd enjoy the work. That catches up with them. Three years is a long time in a trade you dislike, and German employers can tell in an interview whether your interest is genuine. Pick the work you'd actually want to do, and let the salary follow - not the other way round.

3. Expecting a shortcut

A few arrive believing that paying a fee buys a guaranteed outcome - that the visa, the employer and the job are simply purchased. Then the first real hurdle arrives and the whole thing feels like a betrayal. But no honest programme, ours included, sells a guarantee. What you're buying is a genuine, structured pathway and a real shot. The effort remains yours, and the aspirants who understand that from day one are the ones still standing at the end.

4. The motivation dip nobody warns you about

Almost everyone hits a low patch - typically somewhere in the middle of the language journey, when the initial excitement has faded and B2 still feels far away. This is completely normal, and it is not a sign you've made a mistake. The difference between those who finish and those who don't usually isn't talent; it's what they do in that dip. Those who treat it as a phase get through it. Those who treat it as a verdict quit.

5. Not being ready to actually leave

Moving countries at 18 or 20 is genuinely hard. Homesickness is real, the first German winter is real, and some people discover - honestly and legitimately - that they weren't ready to live far from family. There's no shame in that. But it's worth asking yourself the question properly before you enrol rather than after you land.

6. Family pressure pulling in two directions

Some aspirants start this journey to satisfy a parent, or push against a family that isn't behind them. Both make the hard months harder. The journeys that go smoothly are the ones where the aspirant genuinely wants it and the family genuinely supports it. That's exactly why we encourage parents to join the counselling call - alignment at the start prevents a great deal of pain later.

So how do you make sure you finish?

None of these obstacles are mysterious, and none require exceptional ability. Do these and you're already ahead of most:

• Treat the German as the job - consistent weekly hours, not bursts of cramming.
• Choose a trade you'd genuinely enjoy, not just the one with the biggest number attached.
• Expect the dip, and plan to push through it rather than be surprised by it.
• Get your family properly on board before you start, not halfway through.
• Ask hard questions now - and be sceptical of anyone who only tells you the good parts.

What's the single biggest reason people don't finish?

The German. Reaching B2 takes 10–12 months of steady effort, and the people who struggle are almost always the ones who assumed it would happen passively. It's very achievable - hundreds do it every year - but only with consistent work.

Is it normal to feel like giving up partway?

Completely normal, and it's not a sign you chose wrong. Nearly everyone hits a motivation dip, usually mid-language-journey. What matters is recognising it as a phase rather than a verdict. Talk to your trainers and your batch - they're in the same place.

How do I know if this path is genuinely right for me?

Ask yourself honestly: am I willing to study German seriously for 10–12 months? Would I enjoy this kind of hands-on or technical work? Am I ready to live far from family? Is my family behind me? If those answers are yes, you're the kind of aspirant who does well here.
