Your Indian Driving Licence in Germany: The Honest Rules

A common and sensible question

Plenty of aspirants already drive in India and naturally wonder: can I drive in Germany too? It's a fair question, and the answer has a clear ‘yes, but’ shape to it. You can drive on your Indian licence for a while - but not indefinitely, and the full conversion is more involved than most people expect. Here are the honest rules so you can plan properly.

The six-month rule - and when the clock starts

You may drive in Germany on your valid Indian licence for six months - but here's the detail almost everyone gets wrong: the six months is counted from the date of your Anmeldung (your address registration), not from the day you landed. After those six months, your Indian licence is no longer valid for driving in Germany, regardless of its expiry date printed in India.

During that six-month window, you also need a certified German translation of your Indian licence (the ADAC provides one for roughly €30–€35), or an International Driving Permit obtained in India before you travel. Carry it alongside your licence.

Converting to a German licence: the honest picture

Here's where expectations need managing. Some countries can simply swap their licence for a German one. India cannot - an Indian licence is not directly exchanged. To get a German licence, you generally have to pass a theory test and a practical driving test, much like starting over, along with a first-aid course and an eye test.

It's also not cheap or quick. Between the tests, driving-school lessons and fees, the process commonly runs to several hundred euros and can take a couple of months. It's very doable - many Indians do it - but go in knowing it's a real project, not a formality.

The honest truth: most trainees don't bother

Here's the reassuring part, and we'd rather say it than sell you on driving. Most Ausbildung trainees simply don't get a German licence, at least not at first - and they get on perfectly well. Germany's public transport is excellent, and the Deutschlandticket at €63 a month covers buses, trams and regional trains across the whole country. Many trainees cycle. For city life especially, a car is genuinely unnecessary, and skipping the conversion saves you money and hassle in your busy first year.

So treat the licence as optional, not urgent. Settle in, learn the transport, and convert later only if your life actually needs a car - a rural workplace, say, or a long commute with poor connections.

One thing you must not do

Do not keep driving on your Indian licence after the six-month window. It's not a grey area - driving without a valid licence in Germany is a criminal offence, with heavy fines and potential consequences for your record and residence status. If you haven't converted by the time your six months are up, simply stop driving and use public transport until you have a German licence. It genuinely isn't worth the risk.
