When Can I Apply for Family Reunification in Germany

For many professionals especially nurses moving to Germany life feels incomplete without family. The Germany Family Reunification Visa (National Visa, Type D) and, in some cases, a Dependent Visa, allow you to bring your loved ones once key requirements are met.

Requirements for Family Reunification

  • Eligible Family Members

    • Spouses and minor children qualify under the Family Reunification Visa
    • Parents are not included, but may apply separately under a Dependent Visa in exceptional cases
  • Recognition of Qualifications

    • Nurses must obtain full recognition of their qualification in Germany before applying for reunification.
  • Language Requirement

    • Spouses must show A1 German certificate.
    • Children are exempt.
    • If you marry after moving, your spouse must still provide A1 certification.
  • Documents Needed

    • Valid passport, visa forms, cover letter, proof of accommodation, health insurance, marriage or birth certificates, photographs, and visa fee.
    • In some regions, employment contract, salary slips, invitation letter, and wedding photos may also be required.
  • Verification & Translation

    • Indian certificates often require legalisation/verification (can take up to 4 months).
    • Documents must be translated into German/English.
  • Visa Validity

    • Issued for 3-12 months, then converted into a residence permit in Germany
