Work in Germany as a Nurse Visa Recognition & Required Documents

Germany is one of the most attractive destinations for nurses looking to build a successful career abroad. With high demand, excellent working conditions, and competitive salaries, nurses from India and other countries have great opportunities to settle in Germany. However, before you can work as a registered nurse, your qualification must go through the Anerkennung (recognition) process. This outcome determines which visa you should apply for and also directly impacts your salary.

Visa & Recognition (Anerkennung)

Full Recognition
If your nursing qualification is considered fully equivalent to German standards (often requiring 5+ years of relevant work experience in addition to your degree), you are granted a professional license.

  • Job Role: Registered Nurse (Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger/in)
  • Salary: €2,800–€4,200 gross per month (depending on region & experience)

Partial Recognition
If gaps are identified in your education, or you have less than 5 years of experience, you receive partial recognition. To achieve full recognition, you must complete either:

  • Adaptation Course (Anpassungslehrgang), or
  • Knowledge Examination (Kenntnisprüfung), which tests your theoretical & practical nursing skills.

For this, you apply for the Visa for Recognition of Professional Qualifications, usually valid for 12–24 months. During this period, you work as a Nursing Assistant (Pflegehelfer/in) with a lower salary.

  • Salary: €2,600–€3,500 gross per month
  • After passing the Kenntnisprüfung or completing the adaptation course, you gain full recognition and move to the registered nurse pay scale.

No Recognition
In rare cases, if your qualification cannot be recognized, further training or additional studies in Germany may be required before you can reapply

Documents Required for German Recognition & Visa
To process your application for recognition (Bescheid) and visa, you need to submit several documents. These ensure the German authorities can verify your education, work history, and identity.

Checklist of Required Documents:

  • Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages)
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC)
  • Senior Secondary Certificate (Plus 2)
  • Bachelor’s Degree / GNM Certificate
  • Nurse Unique Identification Number (NUID), if available
  • Marksheets
  • Transcript of Records (TOR)
  • Certificate of Employment (COE)
  • Comprehensive CV (as per required German format)
  • Full body & passport-size photographs (studio photo in nurse uniform)
  • Affidavit in case of discrepancies in documents

Germany offers excellent career opportunities for nurses, but the process begins with the recognition (Anerkennung) of your qualification. The type of recognition you receive not only decides which visa you need but also determines your starting salary. With full recognition, you can begin working immediately as a registered nurse, while partial recognition requires completing the Kenntnisprüfung or adaptation course first.

By preparing your documents carefully and understanding the recognition process, you can take the first step toward a rewarding nursing career in Germany
