Why Austrian Nurses Get 14 Salaries a Year – and What It Means for You

🎯 Most nurses comparing Germany and Austria focus on the monthly salary. But there is one benefit unique to Austria that changes the entire financial picture over time – and most Indian nurses have never heard of it.

When Indian nurses compare Germany and Austria, the monthly salary figures look similar. But Austria has a mandatory benefit written into employment law that Germany does not: the 14th salary. Understanding this changes how you should evaluate the two countries financially.

What is the 14th Salary?

Under Austrian collective bargaining law, all employees – including all healthcare workers – receive:

  • Urlaubsgeld – a full extra month’s salary paid in June (holiday pay)
  • Weihnachtsgeld – a full extra month’s salary paid in November (Christmas bonus)

Instead of 12 monthly salaries, Austrian nurses receive 14 per year. These are not discretionary – they are legally guaranteed.

What This Means in Real Numbers

Component Germany Austria
Monthly Gross €3,000 €3,000
Annual (12 months) €36,000 €36,000
Extra Bonus Salaries 0 (or sometimes 1) 2 – guaranteed
Total Annual Gross €36,000 – €39,000 €42,000
Difference Per Year + €3,000 in Austria’s favour
Over 5 Years + €15,000 extra in Austria
In INR (5 years) ≈ ₹15 lakh extra

The Tax Advantage Makes It Even Better

In Austria, the two extra salary payments (Sonderzahlungen) are taxed at just 6% flat – compared to 30–40% regular income tax. This means the net value of each extra payment is proportionally much higher than a regular monthly salary.

For a nurse earning €3,000/month: regular month net ≈ €2,100. Each 14th salary payment net ≈ €2,820 (taxed at only 6%). The 14th salary is effectively more valuable per euro than your normal monthly pay.

Other Financial Benefits Unique to Austria

  • Service anniversary bonuses at 5, 10, and 25 year milestones at many employers
  • Sick leave: full salary maintained for up to 6–12 weeks – among the most generous in Europe
  • Kindergeld (child benefit) – one of Europe’s most generous, important when you bring family
  • Overtime strictly regulated – all hours above 40/week compensated financially

The Financial Case for Austria

At the same monthly salary level, choosing Austria over Germany over a 5-year period means approximately €15,000 (₹13.6 lakh) more in earnings – purely from the 14th salary. Add the concessional tax rate on those extra payments, and the actual financial advantage is even larger.

Combined with lower competition for placements, world-class city quality of life in Vienna, and the same language preparation – the case for Austria is stronger than most nurses realise.
