Not every physiotherapist wants to line up a specific employer before leaving India. Some prefer the idea of arriving in Germany and finding a job on the ground. For them, Germany introduced the Chancenkarte - the Opportunity Card - a modern, points-based route designed exactly for coming first and job-searching second. This blog explains what it is, whether it suits physiotherapists, and how it fits alongside the employer-matched pathway.
It is a genuinely useful route to understand, even if the employer-matched approach ends up being your choice - because knowing your options helps you make an informed decision about how you want to enter Germany.
The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), introduced on 1 June 2024 under Section 20a of the Residence Act, is a residence permit that allows qualified non-EU nationals to enter Germany for up to 12 months to look for a skilled job - without needing a job offer in advance. It was designed to make it easier for skilled workers to come to Germany and find work locally, addressing the country's structural labour shortage.
| Chancenkarte - Key Features | Detail |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Enter Germany to search for a qualified job, without an offer first |
| Duration | Up to 12 months |
| Part-time work allowed | Yes - up to 20 hours per week, any sector, while you search |
| Trial employment | Yes - trial jobs of up to two weeks per employer, unlimited number |
| Introduced | 1 June 2024 (Section 20a Residence Act) |
| After finding a job | Convert to a work permit (Blue Card / skilled worker visa) at the Ausländerbehörde |
There are two routes to a Chancenkarte, and you only need to satisfy one:
| Route | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Skilled-worker (direct) route | If your qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you qualify directly - no points test needed |
| Points route | If you are not yet fully recognised, you qualify by scoring at least 6 points on the points grid, plus meeting language and financial requirements |
For most Indian physiotherapists who have not yet completed full recognition, the points route is the relevant one. And here is the encouraging part specific to physiotherapists: the points system rewards partial recognition, which is exactly the situation many physiotherapists are in after a deficit notice.
To qualify via the points route, you need at least 6 points. Points are awarded across several criteria. Here are the key ones relevant to physiotherapists:
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Partial equivalence of qualification (incl. regulated professions needing compensatory measures) | 4 points |
| Qualification in a shortage occupation | 1 point |
| German language - increasing points for higher levels (A1 up to B2+) | up to several |
| English language (B2 or higher) | 1 point |
| Age 35 or under | 2 points |
| Age 35 to 40 | 1 point |
| Relevant work experience | points by years |
| Previous legal stay in Germany (6+ months in last 5 years) | 1 point |
| Skilled-worker potential of spouse/partner | 1 point |
Whichever route you use, you must prove you can support yourself during the job search. For 2026, the baseline requirement is around €1,091 per month (about €13,092 for the year). This is typically shown via a blocked account (Sperrkonto), a declaration of commitment from someone in Germany, or - helpfully - a part-time job contract of up to 20 hours per week.
The Chancenkarte is one way to enter Germany, but it is not the only one - and for many physiotherapists, the employer-matched route (arriving with a job and recognition pathway already arranged, typically on a Section 16d visa) is smoother. Here is an honest comparison:
| Aspect | Chancenkarte (job search) | Employer-Matched Route |
|---|---|---|
| Job secured before arrival | No - you search on the ground | Yes - matched with an employer first |
| Financial buffer needed | Yes - must show funds for job search | Less - you have an offer and salary |
| Certainty | Lower - no guaranteed job | Higher - employer already onboard |
| Independence | High - you find your own role | Guided - programme coordinates the match |
| Recognition | You still complete it | Coordinated as part of the pathway |
| Best for | Those who want to job-search independently | Those who want a structured, supported entry |
The JSJ pathway is built around the employer-matched model - you reach B2, get pre-screened, receive a Conditional Offer Letter, are matched with a verified employer, and typically enter on a Section 16d recognition visa with your role already secured. This gives more certainty and structure than arriving on a Chancenkarte to search. That said, the Chancenkarte is a legitimate and useful route, and for some candidates - especially those who value independence and are confident job-searching in Germany - it can be an attractive alternative or complement.
The Chancenkarte suits physiotherapists who are confident in their German, comfortable with the uncertainty of searching on the ground, have the financial buffer to support a job search, and value independence. The employer-matched route suits those who prefer certainty, structure, and support, and who would rather arrive with their role and recognition pathway already arranged. Neither is universally 'better' - they suit different temperaments and situations, and understanding both lets you choose the entry that fits you.
